2022 Sang de Pigeon Shiraz, Barossa
Sang de Pigeon (pigeon’s blood) is a nod to my former life as a jewellery valuer. It’s the trade term for the colour of the finest rubies, invariably from the Mogok Stone Tract in Myanmar. The precious grapes for this fragrant and deeply coloured wine were grown far to the south-east, in South Australia’s Barossa Valley.
For wine nerds like me: Fair winter rains were punctuated by a rare October hailstorm in Stone Well, damaging young shoots and reducing yields. Hand-picked from Smyth Road, Stonewell Road and Flaxman’s Valley. 88% destemmed, 12% whole bunch, wild fermented, pressed to French oak, matured for 20 months in barrel (36% new).
4320 bottles produced.
