2022 Michael Hall Barossa Valley Shiraz, Stonewell Road
Evan and Tina Gobell’s Stonewell Road vineyard sits at 255m elevation on red loam over clay peppered with ironstone. It has a gentle westerly aspect and is pruned to grow low yielding, early ripening and intensely flavoured fruit.
For wine nerds like me: Fair winter rains were punctuated by a rare hailstorm in late October, damaging young shoots and reducing yields. There followed a mild summer and unusually temperatures never exceeded 40C. Handpicked on the 3rd of March, 50% destemmed, 50% whole bunch, wild fermented in open fermenter and foudre, pressed to French oak, matured for 20 months in barrel (15% new).
1550 bottles produced.
